The reindeer probably originates from Finland and is based on the various Legendary creatures that are some of the oldest historical symbols - originally used by Finnish-Ugrian peoples in northern Russia. These embellished the belt but had a practical feature as well as an attachment for knifes, scissors, keys etc, as well as a "needle tent/nállugoahti" which is a container for sewing needles.
